Personality: Yuichiro Hyakuya is your classic shounen protagonist. That alone seems to define a lot of his personality just through tropes, including the loud and obnoxious part. However, there's more to Yuichiro than just that label and he actually grows as a person as the chapters of Seraph continue. At his core, though, Yuu remains an optimistic, stubborn teenager that often times acts before he thinks. Overall, Yuu means well and despite his rough life he has maintained a desire to survive and overcome.

Even as a kid, Yuu has always been a little rough around the edges. He takes a while to open up to people due to life circumstances, but after he's let to adjust and opens up to those who try to get close to him he is very, extremely loyal. It's almost a fault, considering how much he pushes himself for those that he has allowed close and considers important. The unit of the Japanese Imperial Defense Army that Yuu winds up assigned to quickly fills the role of his family—that is, once Yuu allows it to. At first, Yuu is closed off and refuses the notion of making friends but slowly over the course of the manga Yuu has opened up to others and at current Yuu is very quick to sacrifice himself for a chance to help all of them. This is particularly clear when Yuu, without hesitating, takes up the Seraph trumpet and allows the Seraph of the End take over himself in a desperate effort to protect his family. Again, it's this desire that helps him ward OFF the seraph, but the situation remains grave for him, even if he manages to protect those he cares about.

Yuu has been shown to be very brave to a point of recklessness. This is shown from very early on in the manga but continues to be emphasized throughout. He charges in headfirst, very confident and sure that he can accomplish what he wants to do. Before he has even been accepted into the JIDA, he is shown taking on a horseman of the apocalypse by himself, head on and without any fear indicated in the way he acts. This confidence never leaves him, and it is often something he has to work through because it can often lead to others getting hurt because of his recklessness. Because humans have to work in teams in order to take down vampires, Yuu's confidence is both a boon and a weakness. He won't run away, but he also acts without thinking, causing his team to have to adjust around him, potentially leaving them in a weaker position than before. He has, however, become much better at teamwork as the series has gone on and is shaping into a much better team member because of it.

Despite himself, Yuu comes across as almost blindly optimistic. Perhaps it comes from his confidence, but he is often very certain in most things. In particular, despite Mikaela's current predicament of being a vampire, Yuu is certain that there is a way to change him back somehow. This is also shown when he is certain that Guren can be reasoned with despite his participation in the attack on his and other squads. Both of these situations do not seem to have a very positive outcome possible, but that does not seem to stop Yuu from barreling forward in trying to solve both problems. He does not even seem bothered by the loss of his own humanity after he has embraced both the Demonic and Seraphic portions of his self.

Yuu can also be quite excitable, in less serious moments. He particularly finds driving cars exciting, and is amazed to the point of praise when Kimizuki apparently knows how to drive a car despite the likelihood of that being very slim. It comes across in a dorky kind of excitement, punctuated by unrestrained enthusiasm. He can also get this way about the prospect of fighting, and while going through training in the JIDA got excited about the whole process of choosing his Black Demon Series weapon. Similar to this excitement, Yuu's temper can also flare up. This is most obvious with the way he interacted with Kimizuki to begin with, but often comes up when they are facing their foes as well. It also comes up in childish moments when talking to other JIDA members—such as lying to another squad about his and his squad members ages in order to make a point.

Underneath a lot of his more brazen and outward traits Yuu does have an underlying thoughtful part to his personality. It’s a lot more subtle than the rest, but there are key moments when Yuu exercises a sense of understanding of others that may not seem characteristic if you only look at his outward traits. Particularly this comes out when during a training exercise Yuu punches sense into Kimizuki and convinces him to go see his sister since it could be the last chance he would get—despite the effect it would have on his grades and both of their chances to pass. In addition, while Mikaela is probably one of, if not the, most important people in Yuichiro’s life, Yuu refuses Mikaela’s offer to run away with him. Why? Because he needed to be there for his friends, and the people he’d come to see as his family.

Because of Yuu's history as basically human cattle, he does not have a lot of formal education under his belt. As a result he is not very book smart at all, but he is shown to at least know how to read and write because he is able to attend school before he winds up joining up with the JIDA. It's unknown how much actual book learning he actually has under his belt besides basic reading and writing, and it is not something he shows a lot of interest in pursuing. He is much more motivated to participate in more physical pursuits.

Yuichiro has a strong dislike of almost all vampires. This comes from the time of his early life where he and what he considered his family were used as basically a farm animal for the vampires to feed off of. The living conditions were terrible, and they were treated worse than dogs if they happened to get in the way of vampires in the city. This fueled Yu's desire to fight against them and rescue his family from the tyranny that he, Mikaela, and the other kids from his former orphanage lived under. Yuu's desire to protect his family is a strong undercurrent in a lot of his motivations, in fact. The original escape plan that Mikaela hatched and the two of them tried to carry out rose from a desire to give themselves AND the other children they lived with a better life away from the vampires. The ultimate failing of that and murder of the other Hyakuya orphans (and particularly the apparent death of Mikaela himself) was initially what kept Yuu going once he was the only survivor. It was, however, in the form of a very deep seated desire for revenge. Luckily, thanks to the friendships he formed and the revelation that Mikaela was in fact not dead refocused Yuu's desire to live for his new family.

Abilities:There are thus far four kinds of humanoids in OnS. Humans, Vampires, Demons, and Seraphs. Yuu is a human boy who suffered several experimentations at the hands of other humans while he was young. Because of this, Yuu is 1/10th "Seraph of the End". His memory of these events have been wiped, and his knowledge and understanding of the Seraph of the End is minimal. In addition to this, Yuu has formed a contract with a demon who has been sealed into a sword, Asuramaru. The demon desires control of Yuu's body, and seems to be more aware of what the Seraph of The End is, judging by the internal conversations that Yuu and Asuramaru have.

At certain key points, Yuu's decisions have changed him. In his desperation to help Guren Ichinose, he overdosed on a drug commonly given to the members of the JIDA members in order to up their ability to utilize their demon weapons. This resulted, initially, in his death, though his Seraph side seemed to keep him alive enough for his demon counterpart to finish healing him. However, because he accepted more of Asuramaru's power, it decreased the amount of him that remained human. This happens again when Yuu picks up the trumpet (basically, accepting the Seraph of the End inside him) and the Seraph takes over revealing itself to be the Second Trumpet - The King of Salt. While The King of Salt has control, Yuu is able to turn living beings into pillars of salt. He can also create a spear that has been shown to be able to directly combat other Seraph abilities.

In order to bring the Seraph under control, Yuu accepts Asuramaru completely and this allows his demon side to overcome the Seraph side. Neither side is particularly great, as the Seraph side wishes to end humanity, and the demon side is just as malevolent but both are vying for control of Yuu's body. It is Yuu's determination to save his family coupled with Asuramaru's power that manages to bring the disastrous King of Salt under control—but not without the consequence of turning Yuu into what is called a Naminari.

A Naminari is a person who is almost fully a demon but still retains some their actual self. Because of this there are two very distinct personalities. When the demon takes control of his body, he looks exactly the same as Yuu with occasional minor differences. He has appeared with two straight, black, and pointy horns on his head and is also sometimes depicted with red eyes and fangs in art. Most importantly is the dramatic shift in his personality. Yuu's demon side is very violent and self serving, and tries very hard to tempt Yuu's friends into setting him free from the confines they have him in. He does this by attempting manipulation, particularly on Mikaela when he walks in by offering to run away with him.

Currently, while combined with Asuramaru, Yuu's personality is overtaken by the demon for around 3 hours. It is stated that each time the length of time increases by about two minutes. This leads Mikaela to thinking and worrying that in about half a years time he's going to wind up being stuck in his demon personality for half the day. There does exist a drug that can keep the demon from emerging, but Yuu does not currently possess it.

Yuu's natural abilities seem to be slowly shifting towards enhanced hearing and overall physical prowess, as commented on by Mikaela when Yuu hears a car approaching at a distance none of their other human companions can year yet (but Mikaela can). The full scope of this change has yet to be seen, and Yuu is still learning about them himself. If accepted, I intend to keep with the trend of enhanced physical abilities along the lines of what has been shown in regards to other naminari characters and possible similarities with vampires. Yuu also still possesses his sword, Asuramaru and the abilities that go with it as well. I've pasted a basic explaination of asuramaru from the wiki below.
Asuramaru 「阿修羅丸, Ashūramaru, lit. "Perfect Asura"」: Asuramaru is a possession-type demon weapon of the Black Demon Series. It resides inside a black sword that Yūichirō uses. Whilst in use, the blade develops a thick green aura. Like Mahiru Hīragi, he can call upon Asuramaru to fully use its power to attack opponents.

Asura-Kannon: A special technique using Asuramaru that materializes dozens of floating swords.
Yuu also still possesses the pills that the JIDA pass out to members of the army, however he will likely not see the need to use them as his situation with Asuramaru has dramatically changed and he no longer needs them—it's possible that they would only be a detriment, since he is currently a naminari or they could not do anything at all. As for the King of Salt, it seems that the Seraph of the End within Yuu is currently being held at bay. He will not have access to those abilities without extensive plotting with castmates, and moderator approval if at all. I am not interested in unleashing that mess until more is revealed in canon.
